CHAIN  DRIVES

          The  velocity ratio  in  belts  and  ropes  are  vary  due  to  slip   Because  of  contact  surface  becoming  slightly  greasy .  Chain  drives  are  used  where  the  distance  between  the  shaft  center  is  short  such  as  cycle ,  motor  vehicles  .

ADVANTAGES  OF  CHAIN  DRIVE  

1 .  Chain  drive  takes  a  less  space  than  ropes  or  belt  drive  .
2 .   No  slip  takes  place
3 .  More  power  is  to  be  transmitted  when  the distance  between   shaft  is  less
4 .  High  transmission  efficiency
5 .  Capable  transmitting  a  good  amount   of  power

CLASSIFICATION  OF  CHAINS 

   The  chains  are  classified  into  hoisting  and  hauling  chains ,  conveyor  chain ,  power  transmission   chain  ,

1 .  HOISTING  AND  HAULING  CHAIN  

                                 The  link  in  such  chains  are  oval  or  square  shape  .  These    chains  operates  at  low   speed  .  These  chains  have  low  manufacturing  cost  .

2 . CONVEYOR  CHAIN

           The  link  in  such  chain  are  either  of  hook  joint  type   or  closed  type   These  chains  run  at  average   slow  speeds  and  lack   smooth  qualities  .

3 .   POWER  TRANSMISSION  CHAIN  

                  These   chains  are  available   at  block ,  roller  and  silent  configuration  .  These  chains  are  essentially  built  for  high  speed  performance  .

    The  block  chain  are  being  put  to  some   use  as  conveyor   chain  operating  at  low  speed  .
