MILLING MACHINE
Milling is the cutting operation that removes metal by feeding the work aganist a rotating cutter having single or multiple cutting edges .
WORKING PRINCIPLE
The workpiece is held on worktable of the machine . The table movement may be longitudinal ,vertical or rotational . The table movement controls the feed of the workpiece aganist the rotating cutter . Except for rotation the cutter has no other motion .
ADVANTAGE OF MILLING MACHINE
1 . Rate of metal remove rapidly as the cutter rotates at high speed .
2 . Higher accuracy and better surface finish is obtain due to multiple cutting edges .
3 . Several surfaces can be machined at the same time
4 . Capability to perform a large variety of operation
5 . Availability of a wide variety of cutter for doing different types of work
The specification of milling machine
1 . Size of worktable
2 . Maximum length of longitudinal , cross , vertical travel of the worktable .
3 . Power of driving motor
4 . Type of drive for different movements
5 . Spindle speed and numbers of speed
6 . Weight of machine and floor space required
HOW MILLING MACHINE ARE CLASSIFIED
1 . KNEE AND COLUMN MILLING MACHINE
Knee and column type milling machine are the general purpose machine most widely used in industry .
1 . FIXED BED MILLING MACHINE
These are the manufacturing types machines used for mass production . In these machine , the cutter height is movement is controlled by the vertical movement of the head stock .
3 . SPECIAL TYPE MILLING MACHINE
These are designed for specific milling operation
