DEFORMATION OF METALS
The change in dimension of forms of matters under applied external force . It is caused by either the mechanical action or by various processes and physio chemical processes . to form mechanical force deformation of metals is necessary .
TYPES OF METAL DEFORMATION
There are two types of deformation
1 . Elastic deformation
2 . Plastic deformation
ELASTIC DEFORMATION
Elastic deformation is the deformation which disappears when load is removed . It proceeds ( takes place before ) plastic deformation . Thus elastic deformation occur when stress applied on it
When tensile load is applied then the piece is longer where as compressive is shorten the piece . when load is removed then metal piece come in original position
Under elastic deformation the strain is nearly proportional to stress . The ratio of stress and strain under elastic deformation called young modulus and modulus of elasticity . And its magnitude is applied under force of attraction between atoms of metals .
Shear stresses is set up along crystal structure in engineering application . This produce displacement in one plane of atoms alternates the other plane of atoms .
PLASTIC DEFORMATION
It is the deformation which proceeds even after load is applied . Plastic deformation is observed on stress in elastic limit . Plastic deformation is the function of stress temperature and rate of staining . Plastic deformation is associated with displacement of the atom with in the grain . permanent shape of the material .
Plastic deformation is generally applied on metturlogical operation of shaping which include stamping in automobile parts , boilers parts .
The metals in plastic deformation is set in slipping .
