CLUTCH
Clutch is the connection between drive and driven shaft . The clutches are mostly used in automobiles practice when the vehicle has to be stopped for a while with the engine still running . Many types of clutches are in use but the most common is the single plate friction clutch
What is friction clutch ?
A friction clutch transmits the power by friction without shock . It is used when sudden and complete disconnection of two rotating shaft is necessary . and the shaft are in axial alignment .
In a single plate clutch essential consists of three main parts
1 . The driven plate or flywheel
2 . Clutch plate or driven plate
3 . pressure plate
The pressure plate and flywheel are representing the two piece of bread . Essentially it consists a steel plate whose both side are lined with a frictional; material . The clutches is withdrawn by forcing the pressure plates again the springs . There then is no contact between the clutch plate and pressure plate The clutch plate moves away from the flywheel . Even the flywheel and pressure plate may be rotating , the clutch plate and hence driven shaft remain stationary
MULTI PLATE CLUTCH
When more torque is to be transmitted such as heavy load transport vehicles and racing cars , used is made of multi plate clutch in which numbers of friction surfaces is increased . the unit consists of
- Friction plate which have friction lying on both sides ., These friction plates are attached at the top and to the flywheel and are also move freely axially . These plates rotate with the flywheel and hence with the driven shaft .
