BRAKES
A break is a device that brings a moving body to rest or holds to the body in a state of rest aganist the action of external force .When the break is applied it offers frictional resistance to an element of the moving machine . The moving then absorb kinetic energy of motion . The kinetic energy absorbed by the brakess is converted into heat either by surrounding or by water then is circulated through passages in the break drum .
Break are used to stop moving member or to control its speed .
CLASSIFICATION
The breaks are classified into hydraulic , electric and mechanical break .
The hydraulic and electric break are mostly used in laboratory , highway trucks .
The mechanical breaks can be catogrised as
Radial break
which apply the retarding force on the break drum in the radial direction . The radial break may be internal or external breakAxial break
where in the force acting on the break drum is in axial direction .
CLASSIFICATION OF BREAK
1 . SINGLE BLOCK OR SHOE BREAK
The single block or shoe break essentially consists of a block or shoe which is pressed against the rotating drum .The block is rigidly fixed to a lever which has one end is fixed and other end is free . This helps to replace the block and wear out . Wood and rubber bloaks are used with light and slowing moving vehicles . Generally the block is made of cast steel .
When force is applied at free end of the lever , the block get pressed aganist the rotating drum . The block exerts a radial force on the drum , this force pass through through the centre of the drum . The frictional between block and drum set up a breaking force and stop the motion of the drum .
2 . DOUBLE BLOCK OR SHOE BREAK
When pressure is applied by pressing the single block aganiost drum then is side thrust in the shaft bearing because of additional load due to the normal force , These produce bending of the shaft The break is set up by the a spring which pulls the upper end of the break arm toghther . When force is applied to the bell crank lever , the spring is compressed and the break is released .
3 . BAND BREAKS
The band break may be simple or differential break .
The simple band break consists of one or more ropes , belts or flexible steel band lined with frictional material . One end of the break is attached to the fulcrum of the lever while the other end is attached to the lever at a point that lies at a known distance from the fulcrum pin .
When force is applied at free end of the lever the band get pressed aganist the external surface of the drum . This act provides the breaking force between the block and drum .
